LightWave Digital has unveiled LightWave 2026, a significant update to its flagship 3D animation and rendering software. This release marks a pivotal moment for the software, which has been revitalized after a period of stagnation under its previous owner, Vizrt. The new development team, comprising LightWave veterans, has injected fresh energy and innovation into the software, addressing the needs of various industries, from illustration and visualization to VFX and architectural design.
One of the standout features of LightWave 2026 is the Advanced Placement (AP) system, a physics-based scene layout tool. AP allows artists to scatter objects in a 3D scene in real-time, with the objects settling under the influence of gravity. This feature is particularly intriguing, as it enables the automatic shattering of objects upon contact with the ground, adding a layer of realism to the scene layout process. The AP system can be rendered in real-time using LightWave's new path-traced viewport preview, RiPR, or baked for offline rendering.
For VFX artists, LightWave 2026 introduces the Fracture tool, a real-time geometry pre-fracturing system. This tool is reminiscent of similar features in other 3D software like Maya and Houdini, or plugins such as Pulldownit. The Fracture tool preserves materials and UVs while supporting various distribution patterns for the resulting shards, making it a versatile asset for destruction simulations.
Another notable addition is THOR, a powerful object replacement plugin for creating procedural lighting arcs between two objects in a 3D scene. THOR generates actual 3D geometry for the lightning, complete with automatic thickness and heat weight maps for precise material control. The plugin offers options for individual bolts, forked lighting, and recursive branching, with key parameters animatable to control the growth of the lighting over time.
Snow Falling 3D, a sophisticated mesh deformer plugin, is also part of the VFX suite. This tool allows artists to create snow and rain effects faster and more efficiently than with standard particles. It generates snow within a user-controlled volume or the shot camera's field of view, with the ability to replace base particles with meshes or VDBs via instancing. The snow can be affected by gravity, wind, updrift, and turbulence, and comes with a rich set of vertex maps for rendering, including support for motion blur.
Architectural artists will appreciate the support for parallax shading, which enables the creation of the illusion of rooms behind windows using 2D textures. This feature is similar to what's available in architectural renderers like V-Ray and Twinmotion, but LightWave's implementation is compatible with both its native render engine and OctaneRender, with a dedicated Window node controlling the atlas maps.
Additionally, LightWave 2026 introduces new ivy and cobweb generators, which are procedural tools for adding climbing plants and webs to 3D scenes. The ivy generator, available in various DCC applications, grows climbing plants like ivy across any surface, influenced by controls for gravity, surface adhesion, and randomness. The cobweb generator, SpiderWeb, produces 3D geometry for webs, offering options for chaotic and spiral designs.
LightWave 2026 also enhances the workflow with a new built-in asset browser, making it easier to view and organize assets such as 3D models, images, videos, HDRIs, and IES lighting data. The browser integrates with key third-party asset libraries, including Quixel Megascans and Maxtree.
The software's integration with OctaneRender has been updated, supporting features like 3D Gaussian Splatting, meshlets, and virtual textures. This integration now allows for the preview of Gaussian Splats rendered in OctaneRender within LightWave's Layout application. Furthermore, OctaneRender for LightWave now supports color-management standard OpenColorIO (OCIO) for its analytical and directional lights, as well as numerous gradient nodes and procedural generators.
In terms of pricing and system requirements, LightWave 2026 is compatible with Windows 10+ and macOS 14.1+. New licenses cost £795 (around $1,070). This release represents a significant step forward for LightWave, offering a wide range of new features and enhancements that cater to the diverse needs of the 3D community.
